Half Races

Half races include 30 km, 25 km and 40 km tracks. You are welcome to ski each of the half races separately, or mix and match your skiing distances to your liking. However, if you ski all these distances, you are in the Half Race Competition. The half races are available in open classes for men and women, and also for younger skiers (born 2008 or later) and seniors 60 years or over. These races are suitable for avid hobby skiers with some experience in endurance sports. Please click on the elevation profile pictures to enlarge them.

Half Keimiö

Olos-Jeris-Olos 30 km

Half Keimiö is suitable for skiers who wish to avoid the taxing trip around the Keimiötunturi Fell with its exhausting climb and rapid downhill. However, even this track has its perils, particularly the steep climb from Siepinkuru gorge and the following speedy downhill. The trail swerves back towards Olos from the Jerisjärvi Lake. It runs on the lake for several kilometres and requires a good technique of skiing on a flat terrain. Towards the end the track gains some elevation as it approaches Olos. Pay attention to your energy level on the long, flat passages so that you still have what it takes to finish those final climbing kilometres. Please remember that the long stretches on the lakes are exposed to wind and this can influence your skiing significantly. If you are skiing in a group, do stick together to minimize the headwind -- but please remember to volunteer for the wind breaker position every now and then. Skiers with a great technique on a flat terrain have an advantage in this race. Your supporters can cheer you in Olos as you start your race. They can easily drive to Jeris to follow your race there. Or they can stay in Olos and join the excitement as the top skiers of the Full Race reach the finish line!

Half Himmelriikki

Pallas-Olos 25 km

Half Himmelriikki is a downhill race. It includes long and easy stretches of downhill. There is one tight curve where you are advised to follow the outer edge of the track leaning inwards to the curve. If the conditions are right, the first part of the trail to Torassieppi will be quick. Be prepared to slow down for a narrow bridge, though. It is the final part that presents the challenge of the day with a long climb towards Olos. Pay attention to your energy reserves and save some extra for the final kilometres. If you perfect your downhill technique before the race you will enjoy this exhilarating trail. Your supporters can enjoy themselves on the sunny patio of the Lapland Hotel Pallas as they come and cheer you at the start.

Half Huikonen

Kerässieppi-Pallas-Olos 40 km

Half Huikonen starts with a crossing of the Sieppijärvi Lake and then heads slowly up to the fells. A variable terrain of ups and downs takes you to Pallas, where the trail descends towards Torassiepi. There is one tight curve where you are advised to follow the outer edge of the track leaning inwards to the curve. If the conditions are right, the first part of the trail to Torassieppi will be fast, but remember to slow down before crossing a narrow bridge. From Torassieppi, a slow and steady climb towards Olos begins. Pay attention to your energy reserves and save something for the final kilometres as well.
